Coastal Garden Re-desisgn and Outdoor Living Space

  • Decorated in a mix of materials makes this an interesting and colourful space and very homelike
  • Planting in coastal areas can be tricky, however if you get the balance right then the large trees/plants will provide shelter to small more delicate varieties.

Brief

Having recently moved to the seafront we needed to design a garden that gave us some privacy, included an outdoor living space, and also we wanted a garden full of foliage, tropical colours, and year round interest.

  • The grass and paths are edged to keep weeds at bay
  • Previously there was a thick tamarisk hedge however the middle section has been removed to open up the space
  • Decorated in a mix of materials makes this an interesting and colourful space and very homelike
  • A wood burning stove will be installed here for alfresco autumnal evenings
  • These planters are perfect for succulents and drought tolerant plants
  • Inset into the ceiling are downlights
  • On top of the garden room is a large roof light
  • On one wall of the room is board storage with a viewing platform on top with hand carved steps. The oversize bamboo balustrade gives it a tropical look and feel.
  • A hand carved finish on the steps give a more natural and tactile look
  • The carving is also practical for when the steps get wet
  • The tamarisk hedge was divided up and large sections have had planters built around them. The tamarisk is great for windy, coastal locations and provides much needed shelter to the rest of the garden and need only yearly maintenace
  • The planters have been topped up with flowering perennials
  • The planters have slate tops, which match in with the retaining walls to the property
  • Pop-up hot tubs are a great option if you don't want something permanently out all year round

  • Banana plants will grow very well in The Witterings
  • When starting a new garden it is nice to introduce a few mature trees into the border
  • This side of the garden faces the prevailing wind so hardier plants/scrubs/trees were selected
  • Small ponds and water features are really good for the overall garden ecosystem
  • The garden room is built with an oversize oak framework, sturdy enough to not need a corner support which opens it up more to the garden
  • The swing has a beautiful blue swirl resin art seat
  • The swing seat is hung with these fittings
  • The garden is full of lots of personality and inspiration from their travels
