Bungalow Loft Conversion // West Wittering

  • Scaffolding has been put up to make access easy for the team
  • Our electrician Sam is renewing all the down lights in the rooms below and tidying all cables ready for the building team
  • Steve is making an opening to fit a padstone which the steel supports will sit on
  • The existing dormer joins seamlessly to the new dormer and new roofing felt across the entire new flat roof

BRIEF

We are converting the loft in this 1970s chalet bungalow to create a large light filled room at the front of the house. We were here previously building a glassroom extension a couple of years ago.

We plan to complete the following:

  • build a long dormer window and attach it to the existing small dormer (a bathroom)
  • remove chimney
  • replace existing velux windows
  • add in a south facing front window
  • re-do the lighting on one half of the house
  • replace and move the boiler
  • build bespoke wardrobes

START OF PROJECT

  • The skip arrives on site marking the start of the project.
  • Scaffolding has been put up to make access easy for the team
  • On the front elevation there will be a south facing window fitted
  • Our electrician Sam is renewing all the down lights in the rooms below and tidying all cables ready for the building team
  • The chimney will be removed to open up this space. The wood burning stove flue will be relocated to another wall.
  • A long dormer window will run the full length of this room
  • A south facing window will be fitted in this wall
  • Steve is making an opening to fit a padstone which the steel supports will sit on

DORMER UPDATE

  • The dormer window framework is being constructed and a window aperture has been created
  • The dormer window is stepped back slight from the front elevation which is more aesthetically pleasing than being flush
  • Here's a good view of the steel supports doing their job
  • You can see how much space the dormer window creates compared to a sloping ceiling
  • The new dormer matches perfectly to the existing dormer, and eventually will be clad in weatherboard cladding

INTERIOR UPDATES

  • Two windows have been fitted this week
  • A large cupboard is being built to house the boiler, and will also have storage shelving inside
  • Upstairs the Parador laminate floor has been laid
  • Eves storage cupboard.
  • In the kitchen below we are starting to remove the chimney
  • Brick by brick the team are carefully taking down the chimney as to not distress the wall behind
  • Plastering is complete and the owners will be doing the decorating themselves
  • In the lounge the fireplace has been bricked up ready for plastering

FINISHED PROJECT

  • Front elevation of the project
  • one new large velux, and 4 replacement velux
  • The whole roof has been renvewed with new battens, felt, and the existing tiles put back
  • The existing dormer joins seamlessly to the new dormer and new roofing felt across the entire new flat roof
  • The new cladding is already starting to fade and will soon blend in with the existing wood
  • The new loft room is light and spacious
  • The room has triple aspect windows to flood the space with light as it is also used as a studio
  • The existing velux leaked and needed replacing and were old they were imperial measurements which meant some structural work needed doing to account for the difference
  • The large built in cupboard houses the boiler
  • A replacement combi boiler is housed in the large cupboard and has easy access to the flue above
